Stills from experiment involving participants sitting and viewing themselves on a monitor via a live-stream.

The room is darkened not only to produce better quality projection but also to create a sense of intimacy. I have chosen to show the work at a low level- maybe even with a cushion- so that the audience is comfortable, at face level, with the image so as not feel threatened. The partition dictates the route the audience takes into the room and disables them from immediately viewing the projection upon entering. I have made no attempt to hide the projector/DVD player as I feel it is unnecessary and would only add confusion to the work.
HOW HIGH?
The box was eventually placed at perfect height for my viewing (the average height for a woman). Some are able to view quite comfortably and others not so much, it might even become a physically staining activity for a taller man. It’s very interesting to see others viewing from a distance though.
HOW HIGH?
Deciding at what height to position the boxes was hard. Too high and shorter people wouldn’t be able to participate. Too low and taller people would not. But isn’t that what it’s about, feeling excluded?
The box acts as a physical boundary, excluding you from the social activity on the outside whilst giving you exclusive access to the activity inside, from which those outside are excluded.
